First Aid Course Article Anita
During July and September of 2002, the staff and members of “Phoenix Clubhouse” used some time after work to take the “Adult First Aid Certificate Course” co-organized by the St. John Ambulance Association. A total of 25 persons participated in this event. While being equipped with knowledge in first aid, the members and staff at the same time developed a stronger and deeper personal relationship, reinforcing our team spirit. We learned together, solved problems together in class, and made preparations for the examinations. During the graduation ceremony on October 18, 2002, it was announced that our passing rate reached 86%. This greatly elated our spirit for the results were above our expectations. Amy said happily, “I am so glad to get this certificate. Now I hope I can put into use what I have learnt. Taking classes with the staff makes me feel we are just classmates. There is no barrier between us." Mimi said: “I didn’t think I could pass, so I was a bit surprised to see the results. I am indeed very happy. Now, my interest in first aid has been peaked!" Our staff Eva said: “This is a very precious experience. We support and encourage one another to cultivate the spirit of learning." Note: “Phoenix Clubhouse” is situated in the Western Psychiatric Centre, using “clubhouse model” to provide psychiatric rehabilitation service. Participants are people recovered from mental illness and they are called “members”. Members work side by side with staff in the daily operation of the clubhouse. We want them to increase their self-confidence, acquire work skills, and re-integrate into the community.
